Key Stage 2 at Statfold Country Park
Our education programme is tailored to meet the national curriculum, whilst our interactive sessions and exciting activities on site will ensure that our young visitors will have fun during their visit!

Due to the national curriculum being subject to change we regularly review our sessions to deliver to your needs. If you have any specific requirements, please talk to us as we may be able to adapt or tailor our current provision. We also welcome any suggestions for new sessions!
Your visit will begin at 10:30am and finish at approximately 2pm. The timetable will include your bespoke workshops that last 30 to 60 minutes, depending on which visit you are taking part in and a ride on a steam train to end the fun. We also offer a large indoor lunch area for you to use for packed lunches along with plenty of toilet facilities. Teachers are welcome to tea and coffee at any time during your visit.
What workshops are available for KS2?
1. The power of steam (iron horses – the beginning of the railway)
This session is good for learners who are covering ‘properties and changes of materials’. Engage with the scientific concepts and the engineering aspects within the railway environment and explore the Industrial Revolution in depth! How were steam trains built and how do they work? Why is George Stephenson known as “the father of the railway”? An in-depth detailed discussion of the Industrial Revolution.
What activities are included in the timetable?

- Water, fuel and fire: museum exploration and tour (can be self-lead or guided)
- Steam train ride

- Exploration and identification of everyday materials used in industry. This workshop is great for the “History of transport” topic
2. Back in time – the people of the past (railway evolution)
Using role-play, storytelling and costume, learners explore the ways of life of people in the past. Detective work handling original objects helps pupils to understand the similarities and differences between the past and the present. Learners ask and answer questions and develop their understanding of old and new, then and now and changes over time with a focus on the steam railway!
